Wednesday 23rd November saw our CPFC A team entertain the current league and cup double winners from 2015/16 Liverpool FC here at Thomas Becket Catholic School.
The champions, Liverpool, came into the game 2nd in the table, having lost only once in the previous two years but came up against a Palace team that were right up for the challenge of playing the Champions.
Palace got off to a really good start and penned Liverpool back in their half in the first few minutes and deserved to go 1-0 in front through skipper Hubert Witkowski. They could not hold onto the lead for long, as Liverpool in their first real attack equalised with good finish from the edge of the box.
The game really opened up from then on, with the home team playing well and causing the visitors some problems on the counter attack. They deserved to go back in front in the 39th minute through Witkowski yet again direct from a corner for his 8th goal of the season.
Liverpool came out fighting in the 2nd half, but Palace held firm defensively and continued to cause the champions problems with their pace up front and energy from midfield. They were rewarded in the 80th minute when striker Mason Frost finished off a slick Palace move for his 7th of the season to make it 3-1 and kill the game off. The final whistle saw jubilant scenes as Liverpool lost for only the 2nd time in two years.
Coach Eddie McGoldrick beamed “I am over the moon for the players and everyone here at Thomas Becket Catholic School today as we have all worked so hard for this, both on and off the pitch, so thank you. We have just beat the national champions and premier league giant Liverpool FC and we fully deserved it. Last year, with no disrespect, we were playing other schools and colleges and now we are winning games in the national premier foundation league, AMAZING!”
